The best preschool workbooks, hands down.July 18th, 2008 @ 8:55 am
I have had these books in my wish list for a long while. Kumon books drew me to them on the shelves when I browsed at bookstores — their simple art and uncomplicated marketing (and overall look) made them stand out among the rest. I had to know more about them.
When I began to research more about Kumon Publishing, I was further convinced that these could easily be workbooks of choice at our house. Japanese inspired/first created, this company is so kawaii in their artwork and presentation. Yes, I had to get some here for the kids to try out.
The first book we tried was My Book of Numbers 1-30. Our oldest is great at counting to 30, but he is still in the dredges of learning to write them out by hand….as well as recognizing them by sight past number 10. G took to this book immediately. After all, it had maze-like activities to help him learn number order, and mazes are his Number One Thing right now.

My First Book of Mazes was next on our list. Obviously, this was a favorite, reason being mazes is what he requests most right now. I love watching him draw the line slowly over the paths, slowing even more as he nears a turn, watching his eyes navigate ahead of his pen to see which direction would lead him to the finish. Mazes are great for development in general (cause and effect, predictability, and even hand-eye coordination). This book’s cheery scenes (3D renderings printed onto flat paper) make you feel like you can dive into the pictures and actually walk along the paths with your feet.
My First Book of Cutting was a book I wanted us to try to help him fine-tune his motor skills….and because the guy just loves to get a pair of scissors and snip, snip, snip scraps of paper I hand over to him….anytime, anywhere. It was not too much of a challenge for him to cut on the straight black lines, but the zig-zag mole tunnel page required a bit more concentration. I marveled at how our endlessly-kinetic little boy sat still for over 10 minutes while he worked at separating the tunnels.

He requested another page to try and soon got to work cutting out a cuckoo clock. After he successfully cut out the clock, he was having so much fun at the task, he proceeded to cut out the clock face….

…and then cut, cut, and cut some more. He got his money’s worth out of this page.

R really took to My Book of Coloring. She expertly chose the correct colored crayon requested at the top of each page and began working on filling in the white dots.

The book stresses that it’s not important that the child colors in completely the space, or even if the child goes outside of the lines. This book is for very young ones learning to hold a crayon, control their fingers, and follow directions. The process, not the end result, is the important part — this goes for most things when teaching toddlers and preschoolers, I’ve found!

Want to win?? Kumon has so very generously offered two titles of their workbooks for one lucky blog reader. All you need to do is go to Kumon Publishing, browse around, and then come back and tell me in a comment from which two books you think your little one(s) would benefit most.
Contest will run through next Friday, July 25th, 2008 at 11pm. Winners will be announced the following day. Sorry; open to US mailing addresses only. Have fun!
Contest is now closed. Thanks to all who entered the drawing!

We are big fans of KUMON books in our house, too! I know my 4 yr old son would LOVE the BOOK OF ALPHABET GAMES and my 1 1/2 yr daughter would REALLY (really really really) love the FIRST BOOK OF COLORING–any chance she has to eat…I mean USE…crayons she does! Looking forward to reading more…

I, too am very drawn to this company. I recently purchased Let’s Cut! for my 2 year old, but we haven’t gotten to it quite yet. Let’s Fold! (2) and My First Book of Tracing (2,3,4) are the next 2 on my list.
I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months and I really enjoy it. Thanks for all the inspiration.

oh, my little guy definitely needs ‘my first book of tracing’ and ‘my first book of cutting.’ he’s pretty good at holding a pencil, but not so great at controlling where the mark goes. also, he gets so frustrated with scissors b/c his fingers slip all the way through the hendle to his palm after the first snip (which makes it impossible to open the scissors for the second snip). thank you for the link - even if i don’t win (pick me! pick me!), i will purchase these or something similar - i didn’t even know workbooks like this existed!
