UPDATED - You’d think I’d be tired of “The Elephant Song” by now, but I’m not.
June 13th, 2008 @ 7:29 am

UPDATED — See last part of post below. We first came across Eric Herman’s “The Elephant Song” on YouTube. I have no idea how; probably a link from a link from a link (the kids and I surf YouTube all the time for children’s music videos). My children (especially my 22-month-old daughter) were immediately drawn to it. She wanted to hear it again, again, again….probably ten times on the first play. I wondered as I peered at her fascinated face: What other music does this guy spin out?

I did some quick clicking and found his website: Eric Herman - Cool Tunes for Kids. He had several more albums! I had to hear them. We received our packet of his music in the mail a couple of days before our family beach trip, and let me just say, what a lifesaver. It made a 10-hour-plus car ride feel like a lot, lot less….we had so much fun with this music! We sang along with the songs we recognized, laughed at the tunes that were so very silly….and listened quietly to the ballads on his “quiet time” CD, Snail’s Pace. (And yes, of course, listened to “The Elephant Song” 20+ times at least over the course of the trip.)

It’s not just that the kids love his songs….it’s saying something that Ken and I love it, too! The sound of Eric and his band (“The Invisible Band”) is reminiscent of the Beatles (think Beatles doing kid stuff!….fun!), and his many voice changes for every character embodied within his lyrics are amazing. My son giggles quietly at the way his voice growls in the pirate song, “Blackbeard, Bluebeard, and Redbeard.” I thought Ken was going to run off of the road laughing at the tongue-twisting, oh-so-hilarious “Cowboy Bergaleoukaleopaleous” (try saying that ten times fast!).

The sweet renditions of “This Little Light of Mine” and “For the Beauty of the Earth” are so special. We simply cannot get enough of the variety on these CDs.

Eric Herman’s notable way of “getting through” to kids is evident in the fact that he spends a lot of his time visiting schools for assemblies and special programs.

His website has even more videos for viewing, the tour schedule, and a listing of all of his CDs and mp3s available for sale.

Win it!! Eric has very generously offered one of you lucky readers TWO of his CDs: Snail’s Pace and Snow Day! All you have to do is click on over to his website and listen to a few of the song samples (click on the word “listen” by each album on this page). See if you can decide which of his albums your family would like best….I promise it’ll hard to pick just one….then come back here and tell me in one comment which one you’d choose. That’s it!

UPDATE: Eric has now again very generously offered up two more additional prizes! He is going to give away full mp3 downloads of two of his albums, Monkey Business and The Kid in the Mirror! I will draw two additional winners for this with the others (each winner will receive one of the mp3 albums). How cool!

Contest only open to US entries. I’ll close the contest at 11pm EST on Saturday, June 21st and announce the winner Sunday the 22nd. Good luck!

Like you say, every album sounds awesome. Ever since you posted about the elephant song before, my kids have come to listen to it (and a number of Eric’s other songs) on YouTube. I took some time this morning to listen to a few samples andI think we would enjoy Snail’s Pace, especially since it has The Elephant Song on it.

My little girls are loving The Elephant Song, as I type. And Scat Cat is perfect for us as my husband (named Dan) is trying to rid our yard ferral cats… So, I guess we’d have to go with Snail’s Pace.

Definitely Monkey Business would be my top choice of all his albums. Of the two giveaway options, I’d pick Snow Day, since my kids are really into more up-tempo songs at the moment.. We have several songs of his already on the kids’ media player, purchased online, and the kids love them. Thanks for the chance.

I like the “can you put ‘em in the box” song from Monkey Business….it is a step up from the Barney “Clean UP” song. I like the Bluebeard, Redbeard, Blackbeard song too. We love pirates!
The Snails Pace CD would be great on car trips when I am trying to make them fall asleep.

Our little 2 month old has trouble sleeping when it’s quiet, so we always have music on for her. But we don’t want too energetic of music, so snail’s pace sounds like the one for us right now. But hubby and I love music, and these are so cool, any of them would be great!

I’d have to say that The Kid in the Mirror! would be the one I’d choose. The girls were in the living room with me while I read this post and watched this video and they both stopped dead in their tracks to listen to “The Elephant Song”. I was amazed!

That being said, my nearly 3-year-old daughter is fascinated by pirates, so I’m sure she’d especially love “Blackbeard, Bluebeard, and Redbeard” from Monkey Business.

Snail’s Pace!! If I don’t win, I’m going to buy! I too was browsing YouTube and stumbled upon The Elephant Song. I (26 year old) loved it! I’d make my child listen to it over and over, not necessarily the other way around (he’s 3 months)!

I’ll go with “The Kid in the Mirror,” though “Snails Pace” is a close second.
