WFMW - Backwards Edition - Organizing JewelryJanuary 9th, 2008 @ 7:27 am

This week’s WFMW is a “backwards” post, meaning I am ASKING for tips rather than giving one. Good thing, because something’s been bothering me lately and I would love some help!
I keep all of my jewelry in the top drawer of our upright chest of drawers. When I first put it in there, I had it nicely spread out and organized into types of jewelry, using old cardboard jewelry gift boxes to hold everything. Well, two years later and more jewelry later, it’s just one big tangled mess of metal, beads, and pearls.

See?? Told ya it was bad.
Nothing I have is of great monetary value….the most expensive thing I own is my diamond engagement ring, and I never, ever take it off. Most of the jewelry I wear is silver. So, lock and key storage is not something I need.
I have considered getting a jewelry armoire, the highboy kind, which would fit in really well with our bedroom furniture. Not that I’ll have enough jewelry to half fill one of those things up, but still. I think I’d feel a tiny bit like a princess.
BUT, if anyone here has a creative out-of-the-way OR pleasing-to-the-eye out-in-the-open way to stash and keep my jewelry separate for easy picking on hurried days, I’d gladly consider them!!
Thanks in advance, and don’t forget to check out (or offer tips to) the other WFMW entries at Rocks In My Dryer!

My stuff was a mess too! I purchased one of those plastic storage drawers (small enough to sit on my linen closet shelf) and then organized my jewelry by style (blue, tortise shell, silver, black, etc.) in small jewelry gift boxes. I used the top and bottom of those little cardboard boxes as dividers within the plastic drawers.
I also started saving all those little plastic bags that come attached to your clothes with the buttons in them and slid earrings, necklaces and rings in to each to seperate them out. Eventually I’d like to have everything seperated out in those small bags. Now I just grab the little bag or go to the small box to get what I need. Works for me :o)

Try going to the craft section or the fishing secion to get a plastic container with a lid that opens and you have different little sections.

I used some scrap trim ( like what you put around doors, windows, that sort) painted it up in a fun colour - actually I marbleized it. It doesn’t matte if the wood is sloped, makes it even nicer…I put the thick edge up.
Then with upholstery tacks, I put them in at half inch intervals. Now my chains etc hang tangle free, it’s a cheap project, can be as long as you need or as your space dictates and it can be tweaked for chunky things. I have 2 of these hanging on the small wall behind my door, out of the way but very functional.
Hope this helps!

I got an organizer from the Container Store. It looks sort of like one of those over-the-door shoe holders, but is smaller and on a hanger. Plus, you can use both sides. I love this jewelry organizer!

I haven’t tried it, but I heard that a silverware tray works wonders! The sections are long enough to keep necklaces nice and neat!

I use a wooden, expandable silverware tray I got from Target.

Brad got me a jewelry armoire a couple of years ago for Christmas and I love it! I don’t have nearly enough to fill it up either :), but love the addition it made to our bedroom. Let me know if you’d like to see a pic!

I have a ton of (junk) jewelry…well, that’s not fair, but mostly costume that I don’t worry too much about. At the dearly departed Organized Living I got a bunch of clear acrylic boxes with different shaped compartments inside. I have one with a ton of teeny compartments for rings and earrings; two with five big spaces for “chunky” necklaces, pins, & bracelets; and another style for other pieces that can be stored in small spaces. I can see which are gold and silver without opening, and the compartments keep everything separate and doesn’t allow for tangling.
The Container Store (online at least) has a ton of these. I keep ‘em on a shelf.
Good luck!

If you go with the trim wall display for your bracelets and necklaces, you might also consider tacking a square of fabric to your wall for your earrings. You simply poke the backs of your earrings through the fabric to hang them during storage. The fabric is the fun part because it lets you accent your room with a bit more of your personality, or it can be tucked out of sight in a closet. It can be subtle, colorful, or quirky, but be sure to hem the edges so it doesn’t look scrappy.

Whenever someone gives me fancy candy in a box I save the box and wash out the liner that holds the candy. It’s perfect to hold and seperate small pieces of jewelry and slips easily into a dresser drawer.
It’s also a nice way to recycle.
