Spring desktops

Here are the desktops I’m currently rocking on my office machine. You don’t have to like them. I like them. I made them. I didn’t speak the quotes, but they inspire me.

For today’s reading I suggest you check out the following:
Typographica (newly redesigned)

ECHOLAB, sound design

I love ECHOLAB, creators of wonderful sound design. Not a shabby little promo video, either.

Nine Inch Nails: Ghosts I – IV Limited Edition

0

I know I saw it when it came out, but why didn’t I jump on this Nine Inch Nails: Ghosts I – IV Limited Edition kit when I had the chance? I mean, it included vinyl.

Unleash question: what are you reading?

0

In an ongoing series of posts I’ll be answering questions raised from Unleash (or linking you to answers). Today’s question: “Wanted to get some info on research and resources from video production team. Websites, magazines, etc…”

First answer, as for websites, here is a post with some recommendations. Would you faithful avclub readers will be kind enough to fill in some more suggestions in the comment?

As for magazines, we’re crazy about reading ‘em. What do we subscribe to?
Digit
Computer Arts
Stash (a DVD magazine, highly recommended)
Wired
How
Esquire (at least Will loves this one)
ID
Readymade

Books? We don’t normally read a ton of them for video / design ideas primarily because the web and magazines seem to be a little more timely. However, there are a few on my shelf in front of them you might enjoy.

1,000 Type Treatments
Creative Sparks
Type in Motion 2 (No. 2)
Creating motion graphics – anything in this series
Motion Blur: Graphic Moving Imagemakers
Neubau Welt 01
Neubau Modul 02

How this helps. Be sure to read anything else here tagged “Unleash.”

Good reading

If you were at Unleash and were wondering “hey? What blogs does Ken read regularly?” here are some suggestions:

- Motionographer
- Notcot.org
- Shape+Colour
- Smashing Magazine
- Photoshop Disasters
- YouWorkForThem Blog
- Daring Fireball for you Mac fanatics

Great job

Now that’s the type of encouragement card we should use.

Where’s my Bailout series package

2

If you’re coming to Unleash this year we’re going into a little more detail on this piece and how it came about (there’s your breakout teaser). Here’s the open and a sample of the counter for NewSpring’s current series “Where’s my Bailout?”

Thanks to Riley (voice over talent), Justin (production assistant, and hand model), Adam (studio creator), and Shua (idea and creativity generation) for their help on this piece.

I can totally see Ben or Shua wearing this shirt.

It could happen

Nice motion piece on the potential consequences of a major quake in California. As I think about it, it’s pretty dismal. But the piece does end on a call to action and element of hope. I link it here because I love the animation style and voice over tone.

Design feeds?

0

Part of this year’s goal was to reduce my RSS / Blog reading by 40%. I did just that a week ago and while I’m glad to not be weighed down by the excess reading, I’m finding myself in need of some fresh design / artistic blog reads.

What sites do you guys recommend I begin reading? A few criteria, I like a site with good pictures in the RSS feed, full posts are preferred (though notcot.org still sits high on my list), and my preferred posting frequency is in the 1-20 posts per day (for a design / art news site). Current sites I’m reading; Shape + Color, Motionographer, and Abduzeedo.

So, what’s it going to be?

Christmas prep

0

Transmissions have been a little sparse over at the AV Club this week but translate that to mean the team’s working extra hard and Christmas services at NewSpring will be extra video-y and glow-y and techno-y. We’re working on a few things you haven’t seen before. Here’s a sample of what my desktop looks like right now.

Brace yourselves. And if you’re in town grab some tickets (all free) and come to one of our Christmas services.

A NewSpring Christmas opener

And so here’s what we came up with for A NewSpring Christmas Party.

I’m sure Adam has more (he’s responsible for the green screen insanity), but here are a few that Sydney snapped so you can see just what went on behind the scenes.
