Hagrid and “the coolest inventor”

This past week I traveled to Chicago with a few guys from NewSpring to attend the Story conference. You may remember in my previous travels I routinely take along a travel buddy, assigned by my son, and use this object to document the trip. This time my daughter sent along Hagrid to join the trip. G’s contribution was a dude he refers to as “the coolest inventor.” As I’m on the road I send them quick snapshots of what I’m seeing. So much fun. Here are my favorites.

Deadmau5, Tabernacle

This past Thursday I had the great joy to follow an entire day of the NLC Conference at NewSpring with a trip down to Atlanta to see Deadmau5 perform at the Tabernacle. It was both audibly and visually arresting. While the iPhone’s camera doesn’t convey the full experience I was able to capture some of the visuals. There was an interesting stage / lighting display that I would gladly see again. The level of production and creativity was inspiring.

What follows are a series of clips I pulled directly from the show.

I suggest you take some time and enjoy Doodle Flix, a site dedicated to the drawing and sketching on Netflix envelopes. Makes me a little sad that I went to streaming-only. Maybe I can start taking screen shots of my Roku and using Skitch to style it up.

USS Yorktown

Spent the week with our family down in Charleston, SC and Meg and I were psyched to take the kids to visit the USS Yorktown. Having been there as Kids ourselves we were really looking forward to their reactions. And being an avid amateur iPhone photographer I looked forward to snapping pictures of assorted mechanical looking things.

wall-e Mecha

G and I created this little “evil wall-e” in a continual quest to raise up a Lego robot army. Unfortunately, he doesn’t move under his own power, but I’m pretty partial to the blue details on the eyes and the rounds of ammo around his chest.

Florence Kick off promo

My first real foray into Cinema 4D for a full promo… this was a quick 1 day build. It’s one of those I really wish I’d had more time to focus on, but in the end I’m sure we’ll end up using the idea again and fleshing out a little more completely.

MORE: series opener

Heavily inspired by Coldplay’s XY album art I give you the opener for our current series entitled “MORE.”

Turns out animating colorful squares is (1) a lot of fun and (2) requires more effort than I would have thought.

Technical notes: I built a FORM particle system, and that worked for the counter but I ultimately needed more control for the opener animation. Enter painstakingly placed and animated dots. Eventually I did work up to sub-comps (see if you can spot the repeating patterns).
