Gorgeous wokspace

I really love this gorgeous workspace. Now include a standing-desk version and I’d be right at home.

nanoloop track 0b

This little 8-bit experiment was created and live performed directly in Nanoloop on the Game Boy, captured in Garageband, and sweetened a little with a pad from Argon (iPhone synth).

Wizard smoke

February 17th, 2010, posted in creativity

I went through a brief skateboard phase and quickly discovered that there are some things I’m just not meant to do. That detail’s not really important, but now I’ve given some context to this piece. If you’ve watched skateboard videos you typically know what to expect. This one is different, beautifully paced, great soundtrack, oh, and all of the subjects are covered with various colored powders which adds so much life to the entire piece.

Finally, I really dig the color grading, too. Beautiful.

Get that idea just right

February 12th, 2010, posted in creativity

The other day at the store my wife’s list said “stone ground / dijon mustard.”. No specifics. No brands. (not even a coupon to guide me).

I walked up to the condiments aisle and immediately picked up the Grey Poupon. Why? Because in my brain I heard (in a very snooty accent) “Pardon me, but would you happen to have any Grey Poupon?”.

When did that commercial last run? 10 years ago? 15? Now THAT is an inspired slogan, deeply buried in my head. It worked not because it was Super Bowl flashy, but because it was a really memorable idea.

I’ll take a good idea fashioned on the back of a napkin over all the glitter and gloss any day.

Massive Attack – Splitting the Atom

New video from Massive Attack. I’m just stunned, so amazingly beautiful. And the amount of detailing that must have gone into this piece is astounding.

So, we had a little dance party at the Wilson house this weekend. That was fun.

This piece ran after the counter and was used as a setup for the first song, Solution.

* This piece is free and clear to download. Do enjoy!

Fix You

January 27th, 2010, posted in creativity, design, video

This is the video compliment to the band’s performance of the track “Fix You” by Coldplay. Over the past 2-3 weeks we have had boards set up at all of our locations where people could sign them if they were saved or baptized at NewSpring.

From there we photographed the boards (along with some of the people) and mixed these images together. This is the result.

Example of the piece in play

Example of one of the boards (this one from Florence)
Board1.1

Technical brief
Boards shot with anything from higher end Canon 5D’s down to standard issue point and shoot cameras. In After Effects, I manually masked out each exterior framing, applied a handful of Levels/Curves treatements to isolation the signatures, then utilized the Multiply blend mode (primarily) to lay on the blacks. The blood elements are from a stock collection of ink drops.

** As special thanks to Barron Cooley and the other slew of volunteers who did all of the photography.

*** The audio track is from the band’s performance recording, which I then used to gauge timing and pace of the song. It was executed as a soft roll video, one where we did not send a complimentary click.

The Best is Yet to Come

January 12th, 2010, posted in creativity, video

Here’s just a little graphical telling of the NewSpring story, set to music and toned in green.

Technical details on this one; as is typical with my pieces as of late I composed this one with a script on the white board first. I’ve that to be the most effective way to lay out a piece, figure out if the storyboard makes sense, and compose the narrative. You’ll see a few elements on there that didn’t make it into the final piece (the time line elements, for instance). Remember the script can be fluid.

My current desktop

New Year, new desktop. On my laptop I seem to get attached to my desktops and have a lot of trouble changing them out for a new one. Maybe it’s my sentimental side. This one I made with a little help from Stock Xchng and some minimal Photoshop color grading. Download the 1440×900 JPEG here.

In the new year I’m rethinking what to do with avclub. Don’t fret, I’ll keep it running. But over the past several years it’s evolved. Doesn’t every blog? Maybe that’s because blogs are personal and driven by the whims of their author. And authors change over time. Regardless, I’ve noticed over the past several months (or even the past full year) a lot of what the avclub has become is a regurgitation of information I find notable or inspirational. Some of that will continue. But I may begin to trade recycled content (and the frequency) for some more thought through ideas. This may mean I post less, but with more planning.

I’ve never been a big fan of blogs with lots and lots of words. Maybe it’s my short attention span, or the fact that I peruse around 150 sites a day (and in those volumes you have to become a scanner). Regardless, I’d like to tell more of a story; and utilize video, image, and hand-drawn scribble. Let me show you what’s inspiring me, or maybe (and more interestingly) show you the results of my inspiration. So let’s see where this goes.

See through truck

December 28th, 2009, posted in creativity, design

Well, not exactly, but this is an interesting concept. It projects whatever the front of the truck sees on the back. I’m sure it’s in an effort to provide safety. Of course I’d be so fascinated I’d probably rear end the thing.

Christmas media

December 24th, 2009, posted in Christ, creativity, video

Here are a few things the team assembled for the Christmas Eve services. Adam (and crew, be sure to check out the liner notes on our Vimeo page) made this delightful opener in conjunction with Jesse Fisher of Kadence.tv.

And I put together this little promo for our upcoming 10th anniversary services.

iPhone stylesheet

December 10th, 2009, posted in creativity, tech

Just for some extra sizzle I created an iPhone stylesheet for commonly used text styles. For all of the lovely new advances on this phone there’s no simple way to even bold text or make it red. Enter my stylesheet.

I created a google doc with the text styles I commonly use (say, for making red notes on an email forward). Then I open the google doc, copy it, and paste it into an email. From there you can select a bit of text, and edit the type. Now you’ve applied text formatting to an iPhone-generated email.

noise.

December 9th, 2009, posted in Christ, creativity, video

This past Sunday Perry had a point he wanted to make concerning the noise we have in our life. Sometimes you can’t hear God for all of the noise. So he had us compose this little piece. The way it worked: when Perry began his point we fired the video. We keyed out the green, so where you see the green you saw live video. As the piece builds we pull down his volume.

Point made. I thought it was pretty effective.

Home for Christmas (series video elements)

December 7th, 2009, posted in Christ, creativity, video

It’s the holiday season, and that means a new freshly minted Christmas series for us at NewSpring. After several brainstorms with many heads coming together we collectively landed on the idea of a shot piece for the series packaging.

The aim was for a series that was a little warmer and human, something that really touched on the concept of the invitation. Home is warm, home is inviting, you can always go home. And then to carry the story a little further we opted to build first half of the story into the 5:00 counter that begins the services. (so hey, if you missed it this week get there early next Sunday to watch the entire piece).

This is a first for us, composing a shot story into the series open, then extending the story earlier into the service. My favorite part of the process was watching every person on the production team contribute a hand. That may be one of my greatest joys of the holiday season, media-wise.
