The Gospel, series open

NewSpring’s Easter series is about The Gospel. For the opener, we decided to help define the term The Gospel, which may or may not be obvious to some, and give it context from Perry’s talks over the next several weeks.

The Gospel open from Ken Wilson on Vimeo.

The idea for the opener was inspired by FOX’s current network branding, living in typography and bold statements about the subject matter. We decided to add contrast to Joshua’s clean-line typography style by incorporating a local pastor, shot by Adam on green screen, and mixed some of his improv sermon lines and a script Adam wrote to fit the series topics. In the end, I love the interplay of words, imagery, and music to feel both “old” and “new” school. Thanks to Pastor James Clark from Wilson Calvary Baptist Church here in Anderson, SC, for his help on this piece.

Hey Ken! I finally to to make it to my first service at NewSpring on Saturday for the 4PM service. Happened to be in the western NC mountains for a spring break vacation, so I made a point to plan my return on Saturday and waste some time in G-ville so I could get to the 4PM Anderson service. I loved the series design that @blankenship did already, but the opener was absolutely gorgeous! The motion and depth of field work on the text was just beautiful.

Even got to watch it twice almost when it glitched into the Passion of the Christ video for some reason the first time. Your team didn’t miss a beat, though, and got it back up as quick as possible. One thing I loved is that Perry didn’t even reference it…the glitch, that is… I don’t know if that’s the standard M.O. there when technical glitches happen or not, but one issue I’ve seen at our church is the apologizing for or referencing the technical difficulties often make a bigger deal of it than it really was when people would just forgive and forget if we act like it didn’t happen. If it completely disrupts the service that’s one thing, but a simple little glitch like that doesn’t need mentioning as it’s obvious something happened. So, well-played if you ask me! Enjoyed the service, too.

Ken,
Great work! Really impressed with the movement and emphasis the topography creates.

Props to Pastor Clark for delivering the Gospel with authority…

Hey Ken,
Watched the service last night at home on my PS3. (BTW, if you watch through the browser on the PS3 then center the mouse in the center of the video and click the right stick, it zooms the video to full screen!!!)

Loved the opener. Very nice.
I’m getting my feet wet with AE now. Was this all done in AE? One of the hardest things that I’m finding is trying to figure out how things are done in AE. I’ve been watching tutorials over at http://www.videocopilot.net and he has some great tutorials that show you start to finish some kewl stuff. I really enjoy the stuff that you guys put out. Would you consider sharing some of the details of how you make some of the effects and animations in your pieces?

Kudos to you and your team for the integration of the passion clips in the message and the song. Were they manually triggered or did you guys setup a click track so the clips and the lyrics would match?

One thing I noticed on the web version that caught me as a little “weird” was some of the wipes. e.g. a couple of times when the camera shot was on RA it would wipe to the motion background making it seem like she was disappearing out of thin air.

I also like the “Need to Know” segment.
Keep up the great work.
