Evernote – how to use it

Here’s a great article on how to effectively use Evernote for absolutely everything. It’s very GTD-based, which I love. If you’ve been on the fence on organizing this way this article will push you over the edge.
Teach your children….

Let this image inspire you. Apparently we’ve inadvertently trained our 2-year-old to document our 4-year-old. I’ve delegated the family photography duties to the kids, and I’m OK with that.
Meg and I, however, still manage the video recording. When G runs the camera it’s slightly reminiscent of Cloverfield.

Here’s a new monome track for you to enjoy. It goes a little long, over 6 minutes, but was comprised of just 5 samples, all sliced and diced, chopped and monomed for fun. Sample built from scratch in Reason (project file here) and samples performed live… no overdubs.
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
mp3 version (5.7 MB)
Note the nice filter sweep at 2:19 (and again at 5:36). I discovered how to map the monome’s orientation (with the internal accelerometer) to the filter frequency.
iPhone camera performance boost

I love the iPhone camera. Sure, it’s not a powerhouse lens. But is always with me, in syncs well, lets me push images to Twitter, the avclub (via the WordPress app), and seems to take decent pictures for a phone cam. One problem exists, however.
I take lots of pictures.
And lots of pictures really clog up your iPhone. They consume precious drive space, and I’ve discovered they really slow down the response time of your camera.
In the end, I don’t really need to carry many photos with me. I love to show someone “hey, look at what I saw just the other day.” But that really only goes back a month or so. I did some digging and tweaked a system that’s really working for me.
I’ve set up iPhoto (on the Mac, sorry Windows users) to clean may camera roll off on every sync. Then I set it to grab the last 2 months worth of iPhone photos and put them back on the phone. I end up with the best of both worlds. I have a my “recent past” backlog, I’m not consuming nearly as much memory (prior to this I peaked at around 1,200 photos… geez), and the camera really responds quicker. Here’s how to do it.
(1) Sync your iPhone to iPhoto.
(2) This article explains how to purge your iPhone’s camera roll.
(3) Create a Smart album by opt-clicking the new album button (pictured).
(4) Enter the following criteria for your Smart Album (pictured).
- match “all”
- Camera Model, is, Apple iPhone
- Date, is in the last, 2, months
[photopress:iphone_smart_album.png,thumb,pp_image]
(5) in iTunes, set your iPhone to sync the newly created iPhone playlist (pictured). You’ll notice I also have an album of iPhone wallpapers for quick reference.
(6) Sync your iPhone again. You’ll see your camera roll now empty, and the last 2 months of photos moved to the new smart album.
(7) Sync your iPhone through iPhoto again to pull of photos. Be sure to select the option to delete all photos after import (they’ll be moved back on to the phone via the smart album).

Thanks, Steve, for this link. What a beautifully shot piece. I see they graded it with Magic Bullet (one of my favorite plugins). And the choice of music is something we never seem to tap into… Billie Holiday.

I came across this lovely handmade book on Etsy tonight. I wonder what such occasion would warrant giving this gift. The obvious choice would be a wedding proposal denial, but I’m sure there are others. Meg suggested getting it for oneself, you know, “I just have to learn to say no.” What do you think?

I must say I’ve not hear about Moon until today, and all I’ve seen is the trailer. And that trailer has done it’s job because I’m fascinated. It reminds me of that artsy-nuevo-sci-fi in the vein of Sunshine or The Fountain. And that’s a good thing.

Looks like Imogen Heap is using her harmonizer again on the new album (found this via her twitter feed). You remember the harmonizer, right? That was the cool device you heard on “Hide and Seek,” (watch a live performance of it here).
Looking into a bit of harmonizer for the outro of “Wait It Out”. on 12seconds.tv

Today the girls of the house had something birthday and princess related to do, so G and I ended up at Lowe’s with some quality time spent in the vacuum cleaner section.
Seriously, I’ve never seen a kid love vacuums more than G.

At a recent trip down to North Point we saw a cool idea… the creative board. I believe they were using it to identify cool typography trends at the time, and we loved the idea of taking creative visual ideas and making the visible, discussable. Here’s the one we installed on the NewSpring production hall. In the future, we’re thinking of clearing it and working with a theme, you know: textures, a single color, images of people. What are some other themes that would inspire?

Highway to Hell visuals

This past week at NewSpring the band played AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” as our opening song. We built some fire-laden visuals to accompany the band. The piece started out with a scripture roll-in and ended with a scripture tag as well. On the center screen onstage (and on the LED light tubes) we built a visual animation that was set to a click track in the band’s ears to sync everything up.
Wanna perform your own Highway to Hell? The clips are downloadable from vimeo.com on our vimeo.com/newspringpro feed. You have to have a vimeo account, then look at the bottom right corner of the video’s page for a Quicktime link.
