Handmade G.I. Joes!

I need to create a category called either AMAZINGAWESOME or THINGSIWOULDDOWITHUNLIMITEDFREETIME. Which has a better ring? In the meantime, here’s a good example, Handmade G.I. Joes!

Monome meets Thingamakit

0

And yet another interesting monome + other weird electronic gadget video called Monome meets Thingamakit. What I really appreciate is that this type of experimentation really is endless in possibilities. It’s not confined by the established rules of some other existing musical genre (nothing wrong with that, I love a good folk ballad as much as the next guy), but it just brings me joy to see something make sound from something that just wasn’t designed to do that.

It starts to get interesting around the 3:25 mark, just to save you a few minutes.

Scanwiches. ’nuff said, except wish I’d thought of it first. I especially like the black backgrounds.

Unleash pre service music

0

I’d received this question the other day and somehow lost the email. I dare not say I deleted it, because that would be the unpardonable sin of gmail, but it did get buried. The question, “can you give me the pre-service playlist at Unleash?” The answer is no, only because I don’t make that playlist. It comes from our front-of-house (and everything else) director Joel. But I did get a screen shot of this Sunday’s playlist to hopefully guide you on your way (thanks Jared Raffini-who-doesn’t-blog).

Tangents Log

1

Do you find yourself getting distracted throughout the day? You know know how it is, you’re working along and you think “hey, maybe I should google more efficient ways to organize my magazines,” or “hey, I wonder what kinds of saltwater I could buy for my son?” Consider creating a Tangents Log where you create a daily log of tangents that come to your mind. Then you can plan to spend a little time at the end of the day summing up these potential tangents into actually useful brainstorming / researching time.

Or would you rather just procrastinate?

Empty In-Box

What a great article in the NYTimes.com about Inbox Zero, or the art of keeping your runaway email under control. It contains some simple, quickly applicable rules and even gives you a “if you already find yourself in over your head, then here’s a plan”-Plan to get started properly managing your email today.

This is a worthwhile 3 minute read / skim.

NewSpring Gearlist, Unleash 2009

Thanks Ben for compiling this typographically lovely NewSpring Gear list. If you were at Unleash 2009 this year and wondered “hey, what kind of camera do those guys use?” or “I’m sure I saw some After Effects usage on that screen” this document should answer your questions.

Unleash question: what are you reading?

0

In an ongoing series of posts I’ll be answering questions raised from Unleash (or linking you to answers). Today’s question: “Wanted to get some info on research and resources from video production team. Websites, magazines, etc…”

First answer, as for websites, here is a post with some recommendations. Would you faithful avclub readers will be kind enough to fill in some more suggestions in the comment?

As for magazines, we’re crazy about reading ‘em. What do we subscribe to?
Digit
Computer Arts
Stash (a DVD magazine, highly recommended)
Wired
How
Esquire (at least Will loves this one)
ID
Readymade

Books? We don’t normally read a ton of them for video / design ideas primarily because the web and magazines seem to be a little more timely. However, there are a few on my shelf in front of them you might enjoy.

1,000 Type Treatments
Creative Sparks
Type in Motion 2 (No. 2)
Creating motion graphics – anything in this series
Motion Blur: Graphic Moving Imagemakers
Neubau Welt 01
Neubau Modul 02

How this helps. Be sure to read anything else here tagged “Unleash.”

Circuit Bent Goosebumps toy

1

More and more I get interested in circuit bending. I’m setting up a little place in the garage where I can start some soldering and modifying of old toys to create new sounds. Sounds I bit strange, and this video doesn’t fully do it justice (but it’s worth mentioning the monome 40h in the background, right?). Looking at the photos this looks like a crew I’d probably hang with.

monome track

2

*** UPDATED 3/16 at 9:45am, track replaced with much better recording ***

On this lazy Saturday I spent some quality time with Reason and the monome. This is what I came up with. At some point I’ll record some video performing this, but an mp3 will have to suffice.

technical notes: this is a direct recording, mistakes and all, no final edits. The sample set is all created from scratch in Reason (using the Electromechanical refill), and samples were live cut on mlr_Aes Edit 0.3.
