Stop motion studio

How do you set up an effective stop motion studio in a small space. Well, I don’t know. But this is the rig Adam set up for us as we work on some pieces for our next series, Where’s my bailout? Justin and I spent quite a bit of time animating this past week. But you’ll have to wait to see the final results. Also to note, we’ve documented the entire process and will post the “making of” later on.

This weekend my parents came over and helped construct phase III to the fort project. This week’s additions, a canvas roof and a bucket and pully system for transporting materials up and down. My favorite addition was the use of i-hooks to add adjustable tension to the bucket’s rope. It slows the descent down to a smooth drop. (farm engineering at it’s best).

Yada yada, excuse, excuse. I didn’t record a line feed (and took the audio straight from my camera). I played with one hand since I had to hold the camera. But still, this is a fun little exercise in electronic music from scratch. I start to get the hang of it around the 3:00 mark.
A few notes, audio generated with Reason, executed on monome 64 with MLRV software (pictured at the top), color treated in After Effects with Magic Bullet Looks… shot with Canon SD1000.

How well did you do in Know your States? Wonder if Mrs. Stone, my 7th grade geography teacher, would be proud?

Bedtime story

The G and I are continuing our journey through the Chronicles of Narnia. Granted he’s four and the story can get a bit over his head. Still if I think he’s spacing out and isn’t paying attention I’ll give him the “buddy, want me to stop for the night?”
G: “NOOOO! Keep reading.”
I’m not sure if it’s the story or the quality time he (and I) enjoy most, but it’s very much worth it. What are you reading? What are you reading to your kids?

One of my first monome experiments. You should know @stevengrey was present at the time. This was conceived with the muon patch. Muon is an “emergent feedback sequencer” and I won’t even begin to act like I know what that fully means.

This afternoon we decided to take advantage of the good weather, plentiful freezer burned bread, and an hour of spare time and we blessed the local ducks with a plethora of carbohydrates. To this contingent of geese I say “you’re welcome.”

RTM in many places

Lest you just joined us I am a huge fan of Remember the Milk for managing To-do lists and all of the various deliverables for which my department is responsible. (whew, just avoided a dangling participle there). Today I added a few more channels to siphon information into this system.
First is Remember The Milk for Quicksilver. Quicksilver is by far the best addition you’ll ever add to your Mac setup. At its least it is an application launcher. As you delve deeper it can interaction with multiple services and information sources on a command-line level. Example. From anywhere on my computer I now do this:
Control+space = bring up Quicksilver
“.” (starts text input)
“this is a thing I need to do” = type in my to-do list item
TAB (moves to the actions list)
type “R” = sets that text to go to my online to-do list, RTM
Enter = submits that to-do list item to my list
From there, I have that to-do item available in Gmail as a sidebar widget, on the RTM site, or on my iPhone in the application.
And if you really geek out (or use Firefox and Windows, thus don’t have Quicksilver available) you can now install RTM for Ubiquity or one of their many other services.
