And so here’s what we came up with for A NewSpring Christmas Party.
A NewSpring Christmas Party opener from Ken Wilson on Vimeo.
I’m sure Adam has more (he’s responsible for the green screen insanity), but here are a few that Sydney snapped so you can see just what went on behind the scenes.

Today my absolute two favorite songs are “I’m yours” by Jason Mraz and “Beds are Burning” by Midnight Oil. I’m not joking on those two, darn catchy.

I don’t know what you have planned for today, but you could do much worse than the Horizon Record’s record fair in Greenville, SC. New vinyl, old vinyl, DJs. I’m not sure what else, but I’ll find out when I get there (with my entire family… that’s right).

After Effects Multiprocessing

When I installed After Effects CS3 and saw the multiprocessing option I made the assumption that it would severely speed up my RAM previews. Why not, right? More processors is better than less I would assume. But I notice now that my RAM previews are extremely sluggish. So, under the Preferences menu I decided to uncheck this option. It seems to make a massive difference for the positive to disable it. Hmm, who knew. I do think that my overall render time benefits from the additional CPUs, but for the short term RAM previews, which are needed at your fingertips, the single CPU option appears to be the better.
Have any of you had experience with this?

Works for Me – Foxmarks and web apps
- At December 3, 2008

In this “works for me wednesday” post, I unpack a combo of Firefox extensions and web apps that make my digital and web info driven life much easier. This works for me because I live off of 4-5 different computer devices. I use a large editing Mac Pro at work, a Macbook Pro laptop, my iPhone (which comprises about 50% of my email / data communication at this point), my old Dell PC at the house, and (believe it or not), the Wii’s Opera web browser from time to time.
My core frustration is that I will find something interesting on the web, bookmark it for later use, then upon needing it realize “hey, that’s on my work computer.” Sound familiar? By using Firefox as my primary browser I can use my toolbar to bookmark commonly referenced sites. Below shows my first few links.
- gifts (folder), current gift research
- E, Evernote, my centralized note-taking app
- n, work email (google apps based)
- mail, gmail
- gCal, my google calendar. Both home and work calendars feed into this.
- iPhone, current apps / ideas I’m researching
- SP, “service planning notes” as a Google doc for upcoming messages. Primarily managed by Karla, my boss’ assistant, but serves as a central place for just about everything we know about any upcoming messages and series.
- PS, “production sheet,” the service production sheet detailing the upcoming Sunday’s message. This is primarily managed by Amanda, my assistant. Having it online allows my entire team (as well as our directors and Greenville production staff) to view it.
- team, an online Google spreadsheet with the volunteer schedule, managed by Pattie, our volunteer volunteer coordinator (yes, I said that right. She’s a volunteer who gives her time to manage our volunteer production staff).
- docs (folder), links to other less-accessed documents
- meg (folder), any links my wife sends me to check out. If I can’t view them right then, I put them here to be able to grab them at a later point.
This strategy of web apps would be sufficient if I used just one computer. With Foxmarks, I’m able to keep multiple browsers synced up. The same link arrangement appears on every computer I use. It’s transparent. Once I set it up it works in the background.
The best part? You can visit the Foxmarks mobile site on the iPhone to get the same information in a low-overhead mobile browser version. I can tag some links from Meg on my Firefox and later pull them up from the iPhone to check out (say, when I get home and have a few minutes before supper).
I have found heavily relying on web apps for most of my data management allows me to (1) be able to work on just about any machine and have full access to all of my data and (2) reduce the risk of a machine-loss equaling a data loss. It enables other platforms like the iPhone or the Wii Opera browser to access the linked data. And because the documents are all online groups of people collaborate.
And did I mention the cost of Google docs and Firefox / Foxmarks? Yeah, free.
