Gelaskins

This weekend I received my shipment from gelaskins. I saw these guys on a design / creativity site last week and as I have this unending obsession with not leaving anything I own in a default state, I was compelled to order a nice set of sticker graphics to doll up my iPhone. What I received was much more satisfying than I’d expected.
Gelaskins are stickers for the back of your iPhone. Why was this this experience so worth it?
(1) The artwork is great. Very creative, much to my personal style.
(2) They cleverly come with matching from wallpapers. Score one for them.
(3) They offered these gelascreens screen covers. Normally not my thing, I decided to toss them on on a whim. Was I ever surprised. The quality is amazing. I can barely tell it’s there, and it actually improves the feel of the iPhone’s glass screen, giving it a slightly tackier feel. My iPhone already feels safer.
(4) They arrived within a few days.
All in all, a win and I’d highly recommend ordering some for yourself. (and they didn’t even ask me to say that).

Three lines, all going somewhere. Love the initial shots, love the concept. Could have been further evolved. (hey, maybe I can further evolve it). Nicely done.

Wired.com has a great article on the most recent NIN tour. I feel fully satisfied after reading this. As I saw the show, I still had that little element of doubt, “hey, did they just record that.” But no, it really was done live.

The Super Genintari would go a long way towards consuming my free time. So I won’t be building it myself. But impressive nevertheless.

Out and about. Need to know a random fact? Sure, most of you would fire up mobile Safari on your iPhones and google away. But what if you don’t have a fancy schmancy data phone. Or what if you’re unsure how to dig out that answer. Enter CHACHA. Text your question to 242-242. Then await the answer.
I first asked a question about last season’s hurricane season. Got my response in about 5 minutes. (pictured)
My second question did stump the machine. “Does Starbuck’s sell Pike’s Place in decaf?”. But still, could be useful.

I rendered the same composition on my desktop and my laptop last week out of curiosity. Yes, there is just a slight different…

From nin.com today, in reference to the second leg of the tour:
If you’ve seen it, come back – we’ll have some new tricks up our sleeve on this next leg. We’re very proud of this show and it’s been exciting (and quite the challenge) for us to present it to you.
Um, yes please.

spider and iPhone camera glitch

This is two posts in one. First, I grabbed a great example of the iPhone camera glitch which I read about on Lifehacker (or something like that) last week. This photo falls into that category.
In the second purpose of this post, take a look at the image (Flickr version).

I was tearing apart the sandbox outside in order to relocate it. When I removed the wooden seat / corner brace, I found this guy. Then I came across two more (they were in 3 of the 4 corners). If you’re thinking “geez, that looks like a black widow but I’ve never seen one that big” then your eyes don’t deceive you. I used a shovel to coax it over and it is in fact a black widow. It’s body section was about the size of the end of my pinkie.
Let this sink in. My kids were playing 1-2 feet away from THREE OF THESE! They were promptly put to death, after the photo op, of course. I’m now devising a strategy to rebuild the sandbox where it’s safe for kids but dangerous for massive black widow spiders.
Any suggestion?

Include this property…

Here’s another nibblet for that 0.4% of you who’ll care. I came across this icon in After Effects the other day and had never noticed it. It’s label says “Include this property in the graph editor set.” First, do you use the graph editor, especially for your camera moves? If not, shame on you. That’s how you get the really good stuff.
Now that you’ve been properly scolded, might I suggest exploring this icon as it allows you to select multiple parameters from multiple layers. Then when you switch to graph editor view (you’ll have to find that one yourself) all of the selected parameters will appear on the graph together. Before I found myself switching between layers trying to control every piece. Now every parameter I’ll need is on one easy graph.

Make-your-own particle system

I couldn’t get Trapcode Form or Particular to behave for one part of this week’s opener so I had to do it old-school… hand laid particles and expression controls. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, then just let it go man, just let it go. After this weekend’s project is done, I’m going to post a final layer count. It will not be small.
Last night’s dream

Last night, I dreamed I got front row tickets… for Nirvana. And in the dream I didn’t fully realize what was going on until the middle of the show. “Wait a minute,” I said. “Kurt Cobain is dead and Dave Grohl leads the Foo Fighters now! (awkward pause) This is a cover band.” The players onstage were just covering Nirvana songs.
Man, I was bummed. I really wanted to see those guys play.
