Last night I caught the movie 21. It was the classic math-genius-turns-Vegas-card-shark flick that’s very consistent with the trailer.

Not too challenging, not too deep. It kept my attention in a “”I know what will happen bit it’s fun to watch” sort of way. I’d rate it at 3 of 5 stars. You lose one point for the actor narrating off-camera parts of the film, but you gain that point back because it’s set in vegas.

GrandCentral

Grandialer is a dialer for app for iPhone to integrate it with the Grand Central service. I’ll try it out of pride for having a beta Grand Central account. Not 100% sure what I’ll do with it, but I’m interested.

NIN visuals

For the NIN finale their drummer came out and interacted with the LED wall via a step sequencer. Either (1) he’s actually triggering the screen with touch or (2) he’s extremely well rehearsed and timed. It’s impressive regardless.

Motion tracking test

Here’s a little motion tracking demo I tried out last week. The footage was shot by Ben for the You Asked For It series. I intentionally chose it because (1) it was out of focus and hand held, thus providing a challenge and (2) because I had it sitting on a hard drive already. I used PFHoe to extrapolate the 3D camera, then laid in the type in After Effects (with a little Magic Bullet for color correction).

How do you, and the new AV

I met with a brilliant web fella over lunch today to discuss the future of AVClub.us and we laid out the plan for an upcoming major revision. I’m going to need a little info from you web readers over the next few weeks as I lay out the new design and we get this thing updated for the 21st century.

First question, do you ever bother looking at my sidebar? If so, what elements do you use (categories, browse by date, Twitter)?

I just got this one in and I’m starting to spin it around the house. But from the looks of it, I’m really going to like Junkie XL’s Big Sounds of the Drags. Listen to it on last.fm. I deem this the soundtrack of this coming weekend.
