Kid Rock says “take my music…”

4

Wired.com reports that Kid Rock suggests listeners acquire his music any way they can. From the article:

He advises fans to download his music for free from P2P services, although he himself doesn’t have to. “I don’t steal things,” he told the BBC. “I’m rich.” As for everyone else, he says, “Download it illegally, I don’t care. I want you to hear my music so I can play live.

Of course, he also later suggests we steal gas from gas stations, too. Hmm. What do you think? Do you buy into this “culture of free?”

  • The sad fact is that you could sing a Nine Inch Nails song in church for free, but to sing modern Christian songs you have to pay royalties or you’re “stealing”.

(NIN has released some of their music as Creative Commons allowing free non-profit performance)

Christian music has conformed to the relatively recent worldly notion that music is property that can be stolen. I don’t think this is in line with scripture.

Paul had some things to say about the Culture of Free. 2 Corinthians 11 is a good start.

  • That’s a tricky one. Yeah it’s cool to try a product for free to see if you like it enough to buy, but the downside is that the cost of the freebies have to be accounted for somewhere. More expensive concerts, very expensive refills for the free razor, etc.

yeah, I love the free NIN albums recently, but I am paying $130 for two tickets to the upcoming show.

    (but it will surely rock)

Going with a basic premise of physics “matter is neither created nor destroyed” leaves me believing that a free based (no, not the Richard Pryor kind) culture or economy is the ultimate game of “Hot Potato”. With “actual costs” being the potato tossed about between companies marketing products through the free culture.

It is all good and profitable unless you are the unfortunate marketer caught holding the “actual costs” when the music stops. Everyone else who has “played” the game will giggle and sigh in relief as the end potato holder pays the toll for all the indirect profits made by his fellows……to quote Grumpy Smurf “It won’t worrrrrrk..”
