Trippy

How do you define trippy? Here’s how I define it tonight.
- running in the dark
- ran to the NewSpring building to pick up my Jeep, which I’d left there over the weekend
- slowed to a walk upon entering the parking lot
- listening to a tune on my iPod I’d written (featured here next week), which was inspired by Brian Eno
- saw several deer in the shadows walking across the parking lot
So, to summarize: tired from run, listening to space music I wrote myself, see deer in a parking lot that will, in 12 hours, be packed with cars. I feel like something out of The Doors movie.
(and I didn’t have a camera)
Spaceless, a yes, and no

Spaceless is a balcony decking concept with integrated furniture. In my book, it is way cool enough to be a “yes.”
And a corresponding “no” to be fairly balanced.
Yo gabba WHAA?

My kids have discovered this new show called Yo Gabba Gabba. I’m convinced it’s created by a video artist with equal parts designer vinyl toy and Dee Lite. It’s pretty trippy; take a look for yourself.

Love Timbuk2. Love Threadless. Love the idea of them together.

Assorted items of interest

Haven’t done this in a while, here’s an assorted list of things that have my attention at this moment.
- I appreciate Collide Magazine’s thoughts on Twitter. Good thought, point to ponder.
- Dilbert is still relevant and funny. (wonder if that’s a nod to the iPhone).
- My newest favorite blog is Typo Hunt Across America. No, it’s not about good typography (I’m talking to you, Shua and Ben) but rather about finding signs with typos in them. I love this stuff.
- This will only be interesting if you already know the answer, but Gmail Blog has a post on the difference between IMAP and POP email.
First fishing trip, weekend wrap up

This weekend, Dad, Gardner, and I went on our first grandfather / father / son fishing trip down to our family farm. The score, Gardner 2, Dad 1, Me 0. So fishing is not one of the things I do well, I’m OK with that. Gardner had a great time (as seen on his expression in the photo). You can view the entire photoset here.
In other weekend news, Daniel Harper did an amazing job on the NewSpring stage this Sunday. Perry has some notes on his message, and it’ll be online at the NewSpring site by tomorrow for streaming.
Meg and I had a great Memorial Day yesterday, which for me included replacing two more windows in the house. If you’re keeping score, that’s 5 windows replaced, 16 to go. It’s a process, people. This time I tackled the upstairs window in Rainey’s room. Yeah, it’s a lot scarier when you work a floor up. I’m not down with the whole “heights” thing, but I did it anyway and they turned out better than the first three. I also installed dimmer switches in a few more locations. If I could, I’d put dimmers over my whole house just so I’d have options.
We had some friends from out of town come hang out yesterday. I did the American thing and grilled burgers. (ran out of gas right in the middle of it, bummer). But that’s why they make convenience stores just down the street. Then we fired up the pit and made S’mores. Mmm. I ended the evening with my neglected Wii.
That’s about it, this week bodes to be a fun one with preparations for the One Prayer series in two weeks. We’re adding a few elements as we have some free time. You’ll just have to come to NewSpring see what comes of it.
Big rock

Dad, G, and I went to our family farm this past weekend. After fishing (pictures forthcoming), we took a walk through the woods and came across this really large rock formation. Where did it come from? Did a glacier deposit it here? It’s way too big to have been “delivered” by people. Me, I’m suggesting it is a meteor from outer space. What? It could be.
What do you think, science buffs? How does a massive boulder end up in the middle of the woods in an area with very, very few rocks? (Abbeville, SC is covered in primarily sandy soil).
Weidy the dancing director

Sundays at NewSpring are great, especially when Weidy the dancing director is working his magic. In all seriousness, this guy loves Jesus, loves NewSpring, and fully buys into the vision of what’s happening here. He’ll be making his way to Greenville in the near future to make video magic happen there. It will be amazing.

G destroys a house

What’s one fun way to keep your kids active? Last week we (finally) threw out our gingerbread house from Christmas. Don’t judge, we made it ourselves. Rather than tossing it into the garbage directly, we armed Gardner (and Rainey) with a hammer and let them go to town. You can’t seem much of the house, but you can really get a feel of the action.

Twitter seems to be down a lot lately. The biggest bummer is that when it’s down, I can’t twitter about the fact that it’s down. I think that if I had to choose, I’d almost prefer Twitter over blogging. Almost.

LCD Soundsystem: 45:33

I’m currently grooving to LCD Soundsystem’s 45:33. It’s a 45 minute, 33 second mix that is supposed to take you through the idea workout, from warm up, high intensity, and cool down phases. From what I understand, it was a collaboration between LCD and Nike. Regardless, it’s funky and fluid. I got it from iTunes for $7.99, or you can pick it up in disk form from Amazon.
What are you grooving to these days?

I’m really digging the two pieces by Fiver. Limited, abstract, but full of personality (and two great music choices, might I add). Check it out.

If you’re on Mac 10.5 (Leopard), this will help speed up your workflow… the ability to preview EPS files through Quicklook. I’ve only been using 10.5 for about two weeks, but I’ve found that I do really love this new feature. Give it a try.

Get movie files off a DVD

The question of how to extract a DVD for editing purposes comes to us a lot. We record our services on consumer DVD Recorders (not unlike something from here). Sure the quality isn’t pristine, but once you rip, edit, and encode for a smaller size on the web, that’s pretty much a non-issue as our currently playback size is 320×240. And DVD Recorders are significantly less expensive than recording to DVC-Pro tape or other professional formats.
After capturing on DVD Recorder, Will extracts the video data onto his machine for editing. I found this article explaining how to extract the DVD, and that’s what initiated this post. We use MPEG-Streamclip but there are other options out there. Hopefully this will steer you in the right direction.
New Magnets

So, we added some new characters to our home made fridge magnets. Before, it was just pictures of our family to remix. Now, we’ve introduced some classic cartoon characters to the fridge mayham. Behold “G-Boop,” or “Betty-G,” not sure which.
