twitter-style wrap up
- At March 28, 2008

here’s a non-twitter (but twitter style) wrap up of my wonderful Friday.
Was up all through the night with Rainey, had that groggy feeling all day.
Got up and had breakfast with G.
Ran errands, dropped off tax stuff, bank, other bank, got fitted for new glasses.
Love new glasses, feel a little more like Rob Bell.
Played Wii. Call of Duty 3.
Went to “the duck pond” AKA Cater’s Lake to feed ducks the last of our sour dough bread. Shopping trip tomorrow. (ducks apparently love sour dough)
Family came over for pizza and hang out.
Watched an “easy on the brain” flick tonight.
Bed.

Cannoli search; Anderson, SC
- At March 27, 2008

Last night, I went out just after supper to search for just one thing. Three things on my list, but only one did I foresee as being problematic. Tonight we’re serving cannolis for supper. To make a cannoli, you need a cannoli shell.
My first stop was at Bloom. After searching in every possible location, using their cool search computer, and asking the people in the bakery, no dice. I was a little surprised that Bloom couldn’t deliver. What’s a techno-savvy epicurian to do? Grab the iPhone, search for the next store (Ingle’s) and call them ahead of time. It went like this:
Them: “Hello, this is Ingle’s”
Me: “Hi, yes, I’m looking for a cannoli shell?”
Them: “Um…”
Me: “A cannoli shell, it’s an Italian pastry shell”
Them: “Hang on…”
(whispering in the background)
Them: “Yeah, we have ‘em”
Me: “Where in the store would I find them?”
(more whispering in the background)
Them: “Aisle 6, Italian food and pasta”
Friends, when I searched aisle 6, all I found was Manicotti / Cannellini pasta. Once I asked for help, the manager took me back to this same spot. Then we ended up in the frozen bread aisle looking at small tart and pie shells.
Enter the iPhone again. While she dug through the frozen pastries, I pulled up Google images, cannoli shells, and proceeded to show her this:

“Ah… I think I know where that is.” Sure enough, she helped me locate it. They were in the baking section, near the chocolate chips. Well played.
If you find yourself in the deep South looking for cannoli shells, carry your iPhone and head to Ingle’s. They were very helpful.
And to top off my shopping experience, I heard one of my favorite songs and was compelled to Twitter it.

This is a concept test. Wish I could claim we did it… but it does show what the HVX200′s are capable of. Very good execution. I’m sure we can find a good use for an application like this. Time lapse never goes out of vogue.

Theory of “muffin as cake”
- At March 20, 2008

New theory. It’s a simple one, muffins are cake. Seriously, does anybody delude themselves into thinking that muffins are healthy? Have you ever really tasted one? Sweet, yes. Fluffy and slightly bread-like, yes. Iced, sometimes (glazed counts). Full of fat and calories, yes. The list goes on and on. Wanna really blow your mind, try comparing it to a cupcake.
If this logic holds true, can I eat cake for breakfast? (because I just did). Does cake at night also serve as “breakfast for supper?” Birthday muffin, anyone? Does icing validate a cake for what it really is, or is it just covering up something?
I’m not trying to solve the mystery here, I’m just a simple guy with an observation, and another in a long string of theories by Ken.

Unleash and the new techno
- At March 18, 2008

Unleash was great this year and gave me the chance to try out a few new things. I was asked to provide some upbeat “techno” for the counter music. I typically supply the music, and it typically falls into some sort of broadly electronic musical genre. Not always, my general rule of thumb in music choice is (1) something appropriate for the vibe of the series, something (2) that builds intensity toward the band and the service launch, and (bonus 3) something that is fresh and new.
For Unleash, I realized we’d have a captive audience and with 10 minutes to work with, I decided to make a mix, blending the songs seamlessly from one to another, often with some additional sound design to ease the transition. I take the music seriously, and spent about 3-4 hours choosing, mixing, and finessing these two sections. For the choices this year, we decided to use fresh electronic artists that perform much like rock bands. Some vocals, fresh styles, tight compositions, something to get you moving and feel familiar but oddly new.
The moral? It doesn’t take fancy gear or programs to create an element that moves people, it takes time and creativity (and a bit of digging and research). The lists:
Session 1.
Dj Shadow and the Cut Chemist, Chilled (track 04), from The Hard Sell
Hexstatic, Red Laser Beam, from When Robots Go Bad!
MSTRCRFT, Street Justice, from The Looks
Session 2.
Cut Chemist, The Audience’s Listening Theme Song, from The Audience’s Listening
Justice, DVNO, from Cross
Basement Jaxx, Plug it in, from Kish Kash
Justice, D.A.N.C.E., from Cross
Digitialism, Homezone, from Idealism
Justice, Newjack, from Cross
I’m really excited about the reaction these playlists have drawn. That’s great confirmation that it was the right direction to go, sweating the details. Now, for your future reading, here are some artists I look forward to featuring or have recently featured. (Do note that you often need to carefully filter through non-instrument music before you just put it up there):
Rockell
Dragonette
Volunteer
Moby
Sia
Jazzanova
The Crystal Method
RJD2
DJ Tiesto
Daft Punk (I’d like to say that we played them for Christmas 2005, way before Kanye)
LCD Soundsystem
Black Market Robot
