My favorite recent tech apps

3

I’ve come across two tech apps / services in the past week that I think I’ll become fanatical over. First off, these are not new applications, but I’m just getting around to working them into my standard workflow.

The first is Handbrake. Handbrake is that one-stop solution to move from DVD directly to iPhone / iPod video. Available on PC and Mac, it makes it easy to dial in a preset and nearly automatically convert your DVD into a format that will play on your iPhone / iPod video. Clean, easy, and now I can watch all those Friends episodes while I’m waiting in line at the grocery store.

The second app is Folder Share. Will’s been using this for months (if not years), but I’m just getting around to trying it. It affords you peer-to-peer level access over your machines. This is a must if you’re a multiple computer user. You’re at the house, on your laptop, and you really want to grab a song that you know is on your office machine. Launch folder share, pull up your work machine hard drive, and you can pull down any file. Also, you can use the web to sync two different folders. So, point folder share at your documents folders of your desktop and laptop, or work machine and office machine, and they will always stay in sync. Add a file at one site, it appears at another.

Look interesting? I thought so.

I’m not sure I will ever be able to embrace watching a film on my iPhone – or equivalent device. Maybe…MAYBE…a TV show. Viral vids, Vodcasts, etc – sure.

I’m too purist as a film-lover to diminish the scope of a film to a 3″ screen and the sound design to a minimalist stereo offering. Call me old fashion. :)

Folder Share sounds awesome! Thanks for that!

Handbrake works great on my Mac, but I’ve never successfully used it on my PC. Just a heads up.
