[this isn't a spoiler, but I'd wait on reading this post if you're going to see the movie]
I went to see I Am Legend last night with Matt. I was really psyched about it, and I’m not sure what to say about it now. Matt totally agrees. It wasn’t terrible, I’m not sure I’d recommend it. It’s strange. I’m glad I saw it, I won’t ever watch it again. It was eerie. It was suspenseful, it was humorous at times, and heart wrenching. The CG was breathtaking, and at the same time totally understated.
Funny, at one key part in the story four couples walked out of the theater. Seriously. I had to laugh a little. If you’ve seen it, you know which scene I’m talking about. (it was a touching, sad part)
Um, yeah. Maybe I should read the novel.

Read the novel, really more of a novella. Matheson was one of the best writers of Twilight Zone scripts and his daughter wrote E.T.
The movie is pretty much as you described and totally off the mark of the original storyline.

so, is the book good or not? I only commit myself to about 5 books / year, so I’d hate to waste one on this. I hear ben coleman’s read it… I could probably skim his copy.

The book is excellent. I should have learned by now not to mix my books and their movie adaptations, but this was a bit of a letdown. The book is very thoughtful and approaches the genre from a pretty unique perspective. I thought the movie took the easy way out and played to the lowest common denominator. Oh well.

the book is fantastic, i am like you re: limited time for books these days, make “i am legend” one of your 5- you won’t be disappointed. it is the source from which so many films and stories have pulled their inspiration, and has had 3 film adaptations now. it is a great, great read.
