Sketchbook, TV, and a Friday

FRIDAY
It’s Friday, which is “Ken’s not in front of a computer much because he’s with his family” Day. But I’ll steal away for a brief minute as both the kids are currently napping and Meg’s fast listing items on eBay.

TV
I haven’t mentioned it yet, but what are we thinking about premiere week? Did anyone notice that about 100 shows (so it seems) launched or picked up their cliff hangars again. I won’t rant about my disappointment of Lost holding off until Feb 2008… what good would it do, and we can supplement with everything else on.

Of all of the launches this week, I caught the following, Heroes, Chuck, Journeyman, ER, The Office. I have a copy of Bionic Woman and Life left to watch. Anything else, I don’t think I can commit to.

My general thoughts. Heroes was fun to watch, but wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped for. Much like its finale, there wasn’t enough going on. That’s probably the challenge for a show with 100 characters. ER was great, and regardless what you say, it one of only a few shows to remain quality over a 14 year span. I enjoyed Chuck, but I don’t think it’ll make it. It’s funny, but I don’t know if that humor-spy-drama formula can keep it going for the long haul. Journeyman has potential. It dulled at the half-hour mark, but with one small insertion of another character it got really interesting. There’s more there. And The Office didn’t disappoint. I’d like to participate in the fun run.

Sketchbook
Last week I was cleaning house in my office and came across a few old concept sketches for the Life Free Live Loud branding. They were going to be a series of posters to advertise the brand, much like a concert flyer. I put them in the sketchbook (or direct here and here, click to close).

And that’s it. I’m going to get back to my cup of Japanese Brown Rice Tea (thanks, Mika!) Have a great weekend.

I watched all of those shows, except ER (I’ve never been able to get into it), and here’s what I think:

Heroes was ok, fun to watch, but started slow. Hopefully the storyline will pick up steam quickly.

Chuck was hard to swallow. It was funny at times, but more often ridiculous. I just can’t get into a show like that. I’ll give it another try next week, but that’ll probably be it.

I really liked Journeyman, but that’s probably because 1) it reminds me vaguely of Quantum Leap, and 2) I really like Kevin McKidd (especially in HBO’s Rome). I’ll definitely give that one another watch.

The Office was amazing, but then it always is. I still like the British version better, even if it makes me a snob.

I enjoyed Life for the same reason as Journeyman – I really like the main character. Damian Lewis was great in Band of Brothers, and I think he’ll be good in Life.

Bionic Woman was ok, a bit cheezy at times. I’ll definitely give it another shot.

Anyway, that’s my take on premier week. I agree though, February can’t come fast enough. There’s nothing on tv that can take the place of Lost in my book. At least Scrubs returns for the final season soon.
